Inside TYPO at ION Orchard: How a Stationery Store Turns Browsing Into Buying
A quick stop at TYPO in Singapore's ION Orchard, from a wall of Christmas ornaments to the piano-shaped keyring I almost bought.
I went to ION Orchard to buy a wifi router, and ended up at TYPO instead.
It has become something of a habit. Every time I pass through Singapore, I stop at this store, whether or not I need anything from it.
This time I left with nothing. The router, and a few other purchases that day, had already used up what I had budgeted for Orchard Road. TYPO, as usual, made that restraint harder than it should have been.
The Wall That Stops Shoppers Mid-Aisle

A single “FROM $11.99” tag sits above a pegboard packed with dozens of hanging ornaments in different shapes and colours, and the sheer density is what slows people down. It is the kind of display that turns a quick errand into a longer one.

Color, Signage and the Stationery Wall

The stationery wall groups diaries and notebooks by colour rather than by type, with a round “Customisation Studio” sign marking a service counter below. A few steps further, cards are sold under a plain “Buy 3 Get 1 Free, Mix and Match” sign, the kind of offer that turns a single card purchase into three.
A “Kitsch Christmas” sign introduces the holiday section early, well before the ornament wall itself. Blue boxed items sit underneath it, a quieter preview of what comes next.
Bundle Pricing as a Merchandising Tool

The same bundle logic from the ornament wall shows up at the mug shelf, where a “Buy 1, Get 1 50% Off Mugs” sign sits above mugs printed with words like SAVAGE and SWEET, next to one that reads EASILY DISTRACTED BY DOGS. The humour is part of the pitch; buying two different mugs feels less like a purchase and more like picking a punchline.
Further along, a “4 Pack Of Ornaments FROM $14.99” sign sits in front of reindeer and Santa-suited dog figurines. The bundle framing nudges a single-ornament impulse toward a set.
Objects I Almost Bought

A few items nearly made it into my basket. A piano-shaped “Pocket Keys” keyring, priced at around S$12, was the one I wanted most, for my child. I put it back and told myself I would come back for it on the next trip.
A mint-coloured eye mask and a red Stick It phone mount were the other two. Neither was a purchase I needed; I picked them up mostly for the colour, then set them back down.
The Holiday Corner Near the Exit

Near the back of the store, animal-shaped keyrings hang alongside bags on a display tree. A white cat figurine with pale blue eyes sits apart from the rest, on its own pink pedestal, part of the holiday assortment but staged like a small centrepiece.
One More Stop, Already Planned
I will be back for the keyring. That much is already decided.
TYPO remains one of the few stores in Singapore I return to without a specific list, and the ornament wall this time made clear why: there is always a new combination of colour and price signage that is hard to walk past. If there is one easy entry point into this store, it is the tote bags; they make an easy gift, and they do not require the kind of restraint everything else here seems to demand.
